Aim of the course: The course is designed to develop an in-depth understanding of civic engagement outcomes, volunteerism, and community service in the USA. By examining, discussing and training the students will focus on development of their personal competences and presentation skills applicable in third sector work. The course is based on practical applications of selected topical areas. The aim of the course is an analyses and training of managerial competences for maximal effectiveness in civic and volunteer engagement. While developing their personal competences, capacities and presentation skills, the students will be acquainted with practical information about chosen 3rd sector organizations in the USA, know-how in the area of leadership, activization and recruitment strategies, reporting, risk and stakeholder relation management.
Preliminary timetable of the course:
1) Introductory lesson: overview and introduction to methodology, course proceedings, topics, evaluation and required readings + communication and soft skills training
2) the history and philosophy of volunteering, related definitions, and various managerial patterns
3) planning for volunteer involvement, assessing staff readiness, defining mission-based roles for volunteers, anticipating and managing risks, policy development
4) recruitment strategies, screening and placement, orientation to an organization
5) case study / training 1: encouragement and empowerement of public / civic movements
6) staff-volunteer teamwork, performance evaluation, recognition activities, critical internal and external relationships
7) case study / training 2: public diplomacy and advocacy as an effective tool in third sector´s way of the reaching the set goals
8) recordkeeping requirements, outcome evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, software and related technology
9) Case study / Training 3: negotiations in teams on the previously discussed topic
10) resources for effective conduct of efficient third sector work load
11) Case study / Training 4: fundraising and databases for completion of a mission
12) Last Lecture: evaluation of the course, students hand in their final essays, concluding remarks, extra information / suggested further readings, final consultation for students / Possible Extras: Further soft skills trainings
