The Center for North American Studies (CNAS) at the University of Economics in Bratislava is currently the only study program of its kind in Slovakia, at which anybody can obtain extensive information on political, economic and cultural aspects of life in the United States of America and Canada. By means of a wide and varied range of accredited courses the Center offers interdisciplinary access to the North American region. It helps students to think critically about the place of the USA and Canada in the world, the successes and problems of the American and Canadian society and economy. The dynamically developing Center has several unique features thanks to which it has quickly become a very popular provider of practical education and a source of knowledge concerning the North American continent, its particularities and dynamics in a wider context.
The study of the region of North America is particularly important, among others, also due to the significant role that the United States and Canada, as well as private entrepreneurships and institutions from the region, play on the global scene. The USA and Canada are allies of the Slovak Republic and our partners in the Euro-Atlantic project of democracy, security and shared values. The American nation includes hundreds of thousands of Slovaks, whom the America accepted as citizens and who helped to build its prosperity and democracy and protect its security. Nowadays we also see an increasing number of U.S. and Canadian citizens coming to Slovakia. The courses offered by the Center help the students to get to know what we have in common, as well as what the differences between our nations are. America is still very fascinating for the world and for Central Europe due to its paradoxes. Our courses help students to build a solid foundation of knowledge and to be able to use those aspects of the American experience that are relevant for Slovakia.
