Profile

The Faculty of Commerce of the University of Economics in Bratislava is an educational and research institution that provides education in trade-related scientific disciplines. As a long-established Faculty it is well placed among other higher education institutions in Slovakia providing education in the area of business and economics. With regard to its external environment the Faculty of Commerce presents itself as a flexibly linked, complex institution with study programmes resulting from international comparison; it possesses a high-quality professional background and staff; its own publications, professional translations, practical case studies and infrastructure and has a reputation in the business community as well as prestige in international relations in compliance with criteria adopted by the Accreditation Board of the Government of the Slovak Republic. The Faculty trains professionals for their engagement in local and international trade- and production-oriented organisations, consultancy agencies and institutions of state and public administration, as well as in the third sector.

The Mission of the Faculty of Commerce in line with its Statute is to provide high-quality education in business and economics and to train highly-qualified professionals in the field of marketing, trade, tourism, hospitality industry, services, business law, commercial entrepreneurship, product quality management as well as in international business activities which are able to establish themselves and succeed in the labour market, not just in the region but also in the European and international environment. Moreover, the Faculty aims to qualify scientists in the area of economics- and trade-related scientific disciplines for their career in tertiary education and business in a highly-competitive environment and in accordance with society’s needs.

The achievements of the Faculty in recent years were subject to complex accreditation of the Faculty of Commerce which was successfully carried out in 2001, and on the basis of which the Faculty of Commerce has provided and continues to provide education at all tertiary education levels in the accredited fields of study and study programmes. In 2005 the Faculty of Commerce was accredited to provide tertiary education in new study programmes at all three levels, pursuant to Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Universities and on changes and amendments to certain acts as later amended; furthermore, in 2009 it successfully completed the process of complex accreditation of activities pursued by a higher education institution.

The long-term development ambition of the UEB Faculty of Commerce is to turn itself into an educational institution that will be associated with two indispensable words: leadership and excellence. Leadership represents an ability to become an example to others, and excellence an ability to carry out activities in an original manner and at higher standard than those normal in the relevant area. The strategic objective of the Faculty is to lead in providing education in the area of trade, marketing and tourism in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, and to become a European centre of excellence in research in the field of trade-related scientific disciplines by 2019. In order to meet such goals successfully, the efforts of staff, students and Faculty management will be oriented to the encouragement and development of seven key areas: communication, quality, qualification, career, cooperation, competences and creativity.

System of Study

All three university study programme – undergraduate (Bc.) and graduate (Ing. and PhD.) are offered here.

The Bachelor’s programme forms the first level of study. The standard length of study is three years and concludes with the successful completion of the final exam and undergraduate diploma paper defence. Graduates from this programme receive a Bc. degree. Upon completion of this level of study and fulfillment of the Masters programme requirements, students may study for their Master’s degree in one of the accredited 2-year study programmes.

The standard length of the Master’s programmes is two years and concludes with the successful completion of the final exam and graduate thesis defence. Graduates from this programme receive an Ing. degree. Upon completion of this level of study, students may study for their doctoral degree in one of the doctoral study programmes. The standard length of study is three years for full time students and five years for part time students, and concludes with the successful completion of the final exam and doctoral dissertation defence. Graduates from this programme receive a PhD. degree. The study programmes are based on the credit system pursuant to the Proclamation on Credit System Study.

One of the academic priorities of the faculty is the study of foreign languages (French, German, English). The lecturers are qualified professionals from European universities, together with full time lecturers from the faculty. The Francophone study programme has developed as a result of the long term cooperation between the University of Economics in Bratislava and the Pierre Mendès France University in Grenoble and other French universities, including Aix de Marseille University, Claude Bernard University of Lyon and Marne la Valée University. 

Francophone Study Programme Structure and Content

Lessons are conducted exclusively in French. Participants in this programme have the opportunity to study at a French university with the aim of completing their diploma paper. Those students who successfully complete the study programme in French, including the diploma paper, receive a certificate signed by the Dean of the University of Economics in Bratislava and the dean or president of the participating French university.
