Faculty of National Economy

Profile

Academic and research activities within the Faculty have been focusing on macroeconomic theories, corporate finance, microeconomic theories, banking, taxation, insurance, public finance, corporate and international finance, social and regional development and public administration. There is also focus on implementation of information technology into individual management and decision making processes with the goal of preparing conceptual experts for all levels of the national economy. The Faculty occupies a permanently important position in Slovakia regarding the education of economists and national economists. It provides for high quality university education in accredited study programmes in high demand by a great variety of market segments it prepares high quality professional economists able to contribute to further formation of economic theories and to successfully deliver in a variety of economic areas, especially in finance, banking, economic policy and social sciences.The student population of the Faculty is over 2,300 and the full time teachers and other employees number more than 130.

System of Study

Study at the university is provided through accredited study programmes of the faculties at three levels.

Bachelor’s study is the first level of study and generally takes three years to complete. During this time, students must gain at least 180 credits. Upon successful completion of state examination, which also includes the Bachelor’s thesis defense, the graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s degree (“Bc.”).

Master’s study is the second level of study and generally takes two years to complete. During this time, students must gain at least 120 credits. Upon successful completion of the state examination, which also includes the Master’s thesis defense, the graduates are awarded an Engineer’s degree (“Ing.”), which is the equivalent to Master of Science.

Doctoral study as the third level of study generally takes three years to complete for full-time PhD. students and five years for part-time PhD. students. It is completed with the defence of a dissertation thesis and the graduates are awarded the academic degree “Philosophiae doctor” (“PhD.”).

In 1995, the faculty adopted the credit system of study, which became compatible with the European ECTS standard in 2005.
