The University of Economics in Bratislava awarded the honorary scientific degree Doctor Honoris Causa to Univ. Doz. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Andreas Wörgötter, representing the University of Technology in Vienna, during the ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the University of Economics in Bratislava on 16 October 2018.

The University of Economics in Bratislava expresses its appreciation and recognition to prestigious personalities inter alia by awarding them the honorary scientific degree “Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Economics in Bratislava”. These prestigious personalities with recognition in an international perspective, or in the framework of Slovakia, have contributed through their work as well as their endeavour in the society or in academia to the development of co-operation between the University of Economics in Bratislava and the respective institution they represent. Throughout the history of the University the honorary scientific degree “Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Economics in Bratislava” has been awarded to thirty-four personalities, of which thirty represent institutions in international realms and four in the Slovak Republic.

The University of Economics in Bratislava highly appreciates the contribution of Professor Andreas Wörgötter to the development of economic sciences and the theory of economic policy. In his work he provided significant boost to the debate and the development of the so-called Austro-Keynesianism, which considerably influenced the economic policy in Austria in the 1970s, maintaining simultaneously a low level of unemployment with a relatively stable price level. The discussion on Austro-Keynesianism was stimulating for other countries across the Austrian borders, too.

Professor Andreas Wörgötter is deemed to be one of the leading experts on evolution of the economic policy in transition economies, with his devoted professional interest in economic developments in countries undergoing the process of rapid transformation just like his personal endeavour aimed at facilitating a smooth transition of post-communist countries to the market economy. Comprehension as well as experience of Professor Andreas Wörgötter associated with the transformation of post-communist countries were further intensified in his position of the Head of Division V of the Country Studies Branch in the Department of Economics of the OECD with focus not just on highly developed economies, but particularly on clusters of post-communist countries. Ever since the beginning of economic transformation of Slovakia within the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic as well as in terms of the successor Slovak Republic, Professor Andreas Wörgötter has not only had a continuous interest in economic developments in Slovakia, but has also played a significant role in mentoring and coaching experts for the Slovak Republic.

"By awarding the honorary scientific degree “Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Economics in Bratislava” the University expresses its respect to Professor Andreas Wörgötter as an internationally recognised personality in academia and one of the leading international experts on the economy of the Slovak Republic since the dawn of its transformation until recently", the Rector of the University of Economics in Bratislava Prof. Ferdinand Daňo, PhD. stated.
